OLMEC
The key concept circulating in the discussion video for this mask is that it is an ancient one. It was made before the time of Aztecs in the Olmec culture. And it was small enough to be used as a burial offering, which happens a lot at their religion. I loved how the mask showed us what people looked like, facial feature wise. And how they idealized their own beauty.

FEATHERED HEADDRESS
This replica of a feathered headdress was sent by colonists to show off what kind of amazing art these global people had been creating. It was definitely a luxury item, and just the fact that it circulated around the world hints a lot to long-distance trade as well as imperialism. I loved being able to see this headdress, so colorful and so beautiful!

BUNDU
In Sande society, this mask is worn on the head to teach young women how to become good wives and mothers. It is so Fascinating to see that an in animate objects can teach young women how to gossip less, listen less, keep their heads down and just do their womanly duties. It’s sad how controlled they are, but it is an interesting thing to learn about. I loved learning that there was a female under culture to this society, a secret society for women.

FEMALE PWO
This mask from the was worn on the head of a man, but it was meant to represent a woman. It says a lot about Chokwe culture, and how it was a matriarchy. They honored and celebrated women rather than deemed them as inferior to men.  It is definitely refreshing to see.

BUK
This turtle shell mask was made of precious material, and definitely a luxury item. It represented a man and a bird, and I love these discussion videos. We often see global art but never dive deeply into the meanings of it, which I think is so important. For us to be able to remove our selves from the mentally high pedestal that we as a culture have placed European art on, we must learn about other cultures, ones that were once deemed “savage” or maybe just “inferior” to our own. Thank you for including these in our lessons!
