JACOB LAWRENCE
- Jacob Lawrence was a Harlem Renaissance artist who painted the “American scene,” through eyes that survived racism in America during the great depression in the 1960s. Being aware of your own history is so important, especially to minority groups living in cultures that continue to oppress them.
- This video related to the African art influence reading.
- I love Learning about people of color in their culture/life/experiences, especially through their art. I loved hearing Jacobs speak, any type of insight into a culture that is not my own makes me feel as though I’m righting on wrong.
FAITH RINGGOLD
- Faith Ringgold creates art that circulates around sexism and racism in the art world and world in general, and that’s due to the experiences she had to overcome from her hard roots stemming from American past. She uses “story quilts” to express herself and her ideals.
- I believe this film related to modern storytellers as well as African art influences.
- I love fibers art, and I love to see it used for causes that I support!
ROMARE BEARDEN
- Tell stories of the world through black eyes while white passing. It gives him a different life experience, one that juggles both the Northern and southern morals of American past.
- This film relates to the African art influence reading.
- I appreciate his meticulous art and his connection to Greek mythology. I like that he puts people of color in place of historical figures who are typically presented to us as white heros.
FAUVISM
- French 21st-century vibrant hue’d painting movement, pioneered by Matisse and Derain. “Fauv,” means wild beast in French.
- This film relates to the classical art and modern dress reading.
- It’s always interesting to see what used to be considered “radical” art and compare it to what radical art is today.
AMAREO MODIGLIANI
- Italian Jewish expressionistic abstraction artist who created a new approach to art as a white person using African influences in style.
- This film connects to the classical art/modern dress reading as well as the African art influence reading.
- I like to see that white people of the past appreciated African art, but I hope that they were credited and recognized back then. I know it is unlikely as most African art, even today is considered primitive and is not respected as white art is.
DOLCE+GABBANA
- Color, form, texture. These are all formal elements that make fashion expressive.
- This film relates to the classical art and modern dress reading.
- It’s cool to see styles/looks from “antiquity,” which is typically portrayed as white Romans, on not-white models Reminds me of Romare Bearden’s Odyssey.
NORMA KAMALI
- This artist makes clothes for women that both serve utility, function, and fashion.
- it relates to the classical art/modern dress reading.
- Norma is an original. She puts a new spin on fashion, it makes it accessible to the every day woman, while still allowing her to be connected and a part of the art world.
