Mod 14.1

In the creation of my Self-Portrait, I used three different photos for inspiration.
Online, I visited:
  1. The Museum of National de Belas Artes, and saw the “self portrait of Lemanteau de rouge” by Tarsila do Amaral. I chose this artist because of the stylistic choice to have strong form in facial features, like the eyebrows and lips.
  2. “Time Covers - The 50’s” a self portrait by James Thurber from the LIFE Photo Collection. I chose this sketch because I liked the use of descriptive line.
  3. “Self Portrait’’ by Georgette Chen from the National Gallery of Singapore. I chose this one because I liked the forms her face shape took, the color blocking and the use of pigment.

I took a photo on Friday while I was at work, feeling exhausted and sick. (No covid, just a bug) I chose to use it because I think it represents my mood lately. I’m trying my best, but still working right now is hard in the world. And, we have finals stacking up.

And in a Digital Format:

My self portrait.

I was drawn to these inspirational photos for reasons above.

I chose this medium because it’s familiar to me. Relaxing, and I needed that.

I was challenged with what photo to use, since I have been unwell, I didn’t feel like taking one right now. I’m glad I had this photo! The face mask and tired eyes I think capture how I was feeling.

I think this piece represents me well in this time of life. My work places (2) are both still open for take out, and moving to life online with school and socializing has been difficult. I am definitely worn down, but I’m grateful I still have an income and that school has given me things to do (like this project- thank you.)

I really enjoyed making this. Art is always the best gift. Thank you for giving me a reason to create amidst a world of customers, sickness, essays, final exams, presentations ect.

My opinion on the final self portrait: It’s not pretty, its raw. I’m coming to a place in my life where I can appreciate more and more ‘raw’ art. What’s real, in your face and sometimes hard to look at. So, I like this piece. Thank you again.
