Beyond the classical: Byzantine and Later Greek Art
  • key concept: In this film, we discuss the non-secular art of Byzantine culture and Later Greek art, and explore how they influenced each other.
  • relation to reading: I believe this film is most relatable to the reading of prehistoric art and Paleolithic origins. I find that many of the archaeologists and art historians (understandably) had trouble with depicting the meaning behind so much of the representational art. Though beautiful, it’s impossible for us to completely understand why the artist used such technical choices and stylistic influences.
  • opinion/add to depth of this weeks lesson: This film was elemental to this weeks lesson. It’s important to realize how art influences art, and how cultures from different places can still have an impact on each other through the stylistic choices made by artists when creating art. This video illustrated an example of that, one we can both study and admire.

The Greek Awakening: Art from the 5th Century BC
  • key concept: In this film, we explore how civilization sprouted up in Greece- how the culture grew into what it was in ancient times into what it is today. Through the many monumental landmarks of Ancient Greece, we are able to discover more about the culture of the past, as well as our own heritage.
  • relation to reading: I believe this video most relates to the reading ancient Greece and Rome. It discusses Roman and Greek culture as well as their cultivation of art over the years, similar to the film.
  • opinion/add to depth of this weeks lesson: I believe though that article was sufficient, the video adds to the visualization of what ancient Greece was. It was nice to be able to see the monuments as they were being discussed.

The Measure of All Things: Greek Art and the Human Figure
  • key concept: In this film, we are able to look at how the Greeks began their journey in depicting mankind, and how it revolutionized into a more detailed, fluid, and realistic yet beautiful style of art over time
  • relation to reading: I believe that this film is most relatable to the reading titled ancient near East, especially the section that discusses the geography and growth of new cities. The film discusses a lot about civilization and how it blossoms in Greek culture, and this article also illustrates another example of that, in Mesopotamia. This video also relates to the ancient Egypt reading, especially when they discuss the consistency and stability of Egyptian stylistic depictions of the human form and how it relates to Greek art and culture.
  • opinion/add to depth of this weeks lesson:  Similar to the first video, I believe it’s important for us to see examples of how art influences art, and to understand how different cultures from different places all over the world have artists who share technicality traits when creating things that we can all idealize, especially the human form.
