1.)  Dada and Surrealism

1. I chose this video first because I’ve always been attracted to the whimsicalness of Surrealism and Dada as an art movement makes me laugh.

2. Key concepts I found in this video are that: Material liberation in art has grown from these two movements, for example, it isn’t unusual for us to see string, cardboard and tin in our museums anymore, but it used to be. These ideas changed what art could be, quiet the change! Dada, like all art, is a human reaction. Specifically, Dada is a reaction to world ‘nonsense.’ Surrealism, however, IS the nonsense, painted and portrayed in strange and comical works, often packed full with metaphor and ties to the real world. 

2. I thought the reading, “Dada and Surrealism,” related to this video. I especially enjoyed the idea that mentioned surrealism as a subconscious flow, I believe there’s not a truer phrase!

3. As I like to say, I am an extremely visual learner (which is maybe why I choose art as a major) but having visuals like this video really help me to understand what’s important in the works, it especially helps me through an online course. 

2.)  Expressionism 

1. I chose Expressionism second because I feel as though I need a better understanding of it and I would like to learn more about it. 

2. Expressionism is about human expression. It is an artform that deals with human emotion and thought. It allows vulnerability, connection, self reflection, introspection, and relativity to the audience. 

2. “Expressionism,” in the readings 1900s-- folder relates this most to this film. It points out clearly that expressionism’s meaning is in the name- an abstract full of human emotion and thought. 

3. I’m a visual learner so they help greatly. Also, I like that these films are provided to us directly from the school’s library. As a growing student, I find it more and more important that my learning sources be credible and trustworthy, and our Butler Library certainly is. Thank you for giving us the choices you have! When we can select two films from a list, it makes things more personal, and I definitely grow more intrigued.
